Migrating from Outlook.com

You can migrate emails from Outlook.com, Hotmail, or Live accounts to your OnePoundEmail mailbox using the built-in IMAPSync plugin in your DirectAdmin control panel. No command line needed.

1. Prepare Your OnePoundEmail Mailbox

Before starting the migration, make sure you have already:

  • Created the destination email account in OnePoundEmail
  • Logged into DirectAdmin and confirmed it is working

If you haven't done this yet, see the How to Create Email Accounts guide first.

2. Enable IMAP on Outlook.com

IMAP is enabled by default for Outlook accounts, but it's worth double-checking before you begin:

  1. Visit outlook.live.com and sign in.
  2. Click the gear iconView all Outlook settings.
  3. Go to Mail → Sync email.
  4. Confirm that IMAP is enabled.
If you use 2-Step Verification, generate an app password at account.live.com/proofs/AppPassword and use that instead of your regular password.

3. Log into DirectAdmin

  1. Access your DirectAdmin panel via your OnePoundEmail hosting account.
  2. Go to E-Mail Manager → IMAPSync Migrations.

4. Start the IMAPSync Transfer

On the IMAPSync Migrations page, click IMPORT E-MAILS and fill in the following details:

Source - Outlook.com

Host: imap-mail.outlook.com
Port: 993
SSL: Enabled
User: yourname@outlook.com
Password: Your Outlook password (or app password if 2FA is enabled)

Destination - OnePoundEmail

User: Your new OnePoundEmail address
Password: Your OnePoundEmail password

Click START MIGRATION and allow the process to complete.

Migration time depends on mailbox size. Large mailboxes may take several hours - you can safely close the browser and check back later.

5. Best Practices

  • Start with a test migration using a smaller or less important mailbox.
  • Avoid syncing during high-traffic hours for better performance.
  • Keep your Outlook.com account active during migration to avoid interruption.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Authentication Failed Double-check your email address and password. If 2FA is enabled, use an app password instead of your regular Outlook password.
  • Connection Refused Ensure you are using port 993 with SSL enabled. Any other port or configuration will be rejected.
  • Emails Missing Retry the sync, or split a large mailbox into smaller batches and migrate in stages.

7. Post-Migration Steps

  • Update your devices and email clients with OnePoundEmail's connection settings.
  • Update your DNS records (MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC) if you are switching domains - see the Managing DNS Records guide.
  • Keep your Outlook.com account active for a short transition period if needed, just to be safe.
